How To Properly Enjoy Your Tequila
Tequila, sometimes referred to as, Mexican water, is produced in five areas of Mexico, specifically the Mexican state of Jalisco. If produced beyond that region, the spirit is called Mezcal. Often overlooked as a liquor to enjoy neat, a good tequila deserves more than “mixer” status. Many people simply haven’t had the opportunity to taste what distinguished tequilas have to offer. In this article, we’ll discuss how to properly enjoy your tequila, so you’ll look forward to the experience even more the next time you grab a bottle.
There’s More To Tequila Than You Know
First things first, forget everything you thought you knew about tequila. Perhaps, you are one of the lucky ones who learned early on while building your liquor collection, that tequila is one of the most layered, impressive spirits available. For the rest of us, we were late to the game, believing tequila is for shots during “last call.”
A good tequila carries notes of all kinds, depending on the distillery. Senses come alive with hints of tropical fruits, smoke, vanilla, pear, agave, and sometimes even banana. Each type of tequila is unique. Step aside whiskey! Tequila is getting noticed, and it’s ready to show us what it’s got.
Choose Quality
As with any liquor, quality is a must in order to properly enjoy your tequila. Look for tequilas that are 100% agave, not a mix of sugar and agave. Tequila is best when it’s aged, so if you’re deciding between a young tequila and a mature one, go for the longer aged bottle.
You Can Savor Tequila
Tequila makes a great mixer, especially in our favorite summer drink. We’ll get to that, but first we want to point out that a good tequila can stand on its own, and as a result, leaves you thoroughly impressed and wanting more.
To drink tequila neat, use a shot glass or a snifter and pour an ounce or two. Take small sips and chew the tequila as you would your favorite bourbon. Swish it around the mouth and over the tongue, taking in each note before you swallow. Then close your eyes and feel the finish.
For tequila, it’s acceptable to suck on a lime in between sips and even enjoy a little salt, if drinking straight up isn’t your thing. You’ll still experience the flavor as long as you don’t slam it as a shot.
The Margarita
With all due respect, we are requesting you forego the frozen margarita and instead stick with the traditional style, so you may experience what an excellent tequila can do to a little lime and Cointreau. Change things up a bit by replacing the lime juice with grapefruit juice. A good margarita over ice on a hot day is the ultimate summer drink.
As you experience good tequilas, your tastebuds will thank you. You’ll also come up with other cocktail ideas. As you do, remember to choose high quality tequila whether mixing or drinking neat.
